AACC Definition of Dietary Fiber

Dietary fiber is generally recognized as an important nutrient for regulating intestinal conditions. Recent research shows that dietary fiber is also beneficial associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer and other intestinal disorders (diverticulosis and other cancers), heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and geriatric diseases.

Because of the recent rapid increase of these diseases related to insufficient intake of dietary fiber, the Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. government (FDA) has recommended higher intake levels of dietary fiber. Recommended daily intake (RDI) of dietary fiber is 20-30 grams for adults. But, typical American people take about 12-14 grams, too lower than RDI.
